I read comments, I read them again, and in the end, I wonder if we have the same machine with some commentators...
So, to the point:
The machine is decent for its price, and the coffee it makes is excellent. Should you find its golden mean? YES. If you don't want to bother at all, go for a machine with capsules (or buy ESE pods that this one supports), and you'll be drinking the same coffee every time without any effort.
However, if you bought this machine to make a proper espresso, here are some tips:
- One basic advantage is its brand and model. And that's because there are many videos on YouTube about its use, and if you want to delve deeper (more information below).
- DO NOT tamp the coffee too much in the basket. It is pressurized, so it creates its own pressure due to the small hole. Fill the basket just enough (only the double one) and tamp it with the plastic accessory, enough for the coffee to be evenly distributed. No need for exaggeration, it's better to tamp it by hand and not on the counter.
- No matter which supermarket coffee I tried, it never got clogged. It only got slightly more pressurized with coffee from Coffee Island cut at 2.0 and below (there's no reason to do it, I just tried it. If you don't ask them for anything, they grind it at 3.0 for you to understand the difference). Of course, I don't tamp it with obsession, as mentioned before.
- Read the MANUAL carefully! I see people saying that they sent it for service because the double shot button was producing a single shot... The buttons are programmable, for heaven's sake...
- The steam wand makes fantastic frothy milk, but it will give you a hard time when cleaning. For that reason, I removed the metal cover/pipe and left only the rubber wand with a tie wrap on its base, otherwise, it might come off and mess everything up (but even this is not a reason to send it for service, remember what I told you about YouTube? I learned it there too). Check the photo to get a better idea.
- Adjust the machine correctly (temperature, water hardness). Personally, I have the temperature set to high and the water hardness set to low (I only use bottled water with low hardness - it's written on each label). Zagori is an honest choice if you don't want to complicate things.
- If you want to delve even deeper, buy a proper burr grinder, a regular tamper, and a non-pressurized basket for the portafilter. This way, you will increase the amount of coffee in the double shot from around 14g to about 18g, which is the standard in most expensive machines (as well as in professional ones). The basket will fit just fine, as long as it's 51mm in internal diameter and you remove the inner plastic, the one that guides the flow. It's a screw and a small matter. No need to cut anything! And if a little coffee comes out of the screw hole, so what? Unless you're making coffee simultaneously in two single cups, then it's okay. In that case, either cut the plastic or switch to another portafilter (non-pressurized portafilter), you'll find endless options for the EC685. Of course, then you enter different paths, going for a hobby or a true, proper espresso. In the photo, you'll see the difference between the baskets, as well as a 51mm tamper.
- Clean your machine very well. And what do I mean by that: After each use, before turning it off, pour some water into a cup and clean the bottom of the head with a cloth. You'll be surprised by what comes out. If you don't mind, put the cloth where the ear hooks of the latch connect, it collects a lot of coffee. Also, remove the basket and rinse it well, as well as the filter from the basket (the one with the rubber attachment that you pull and it comes out). That's the whole issue. It collects coffee residues and easily clogs that small hole. I imagine I don't need to say anything about the steam nozzle, especially without the metal attachment. With proper cleaning, you won't have any difficulties in the future.
- Finally, I bought a plastic mat (jumbo) which I cut and placed under the machine (reduces noise, not that it was much anyway) and where you put the cup (the black piece in the photo), initially because with the vibrations during operation, a light cup can "walk" and secondly because the stainless steel there gets scratched for fun.
I hope I really helped because it is an excellent choice for this price. Enjoy your coffees correctly, especially now that we enjoy them more at home!
I proceeded to purchase this espresso machine, mainly based on the excellent ratings. However, I did not notice that many positive reviews analyze in great detail the ideal size of the coffee grind so that the coffee maker does not clog every time. This, unfortunately, is a SERIOUS FLAW of the coffee maker. Let's admit it. I have experience with 6 espresso machines so far and I have never had problems of this kind. This coffee maker clogs with the illy espresso ground coffee that I have been drinking for years and it drips drop by drop, unless I use much less coffee than I used to, so a diluted coffee comes out, like a French press. And as if that wasn't enough, the double espresso holder holds one and a half measures and still clogs, because this basket, due to its small size especially at the base, has much fewer holes compared to any other coffee maker. This is a manufacturing flaw that cannot be corrected and is not covered by the warranty. There are countless people struggling on the internet and suggesting various hacks. At least it makes perfect frothy milk, allowing me to make latte art designs (attached photo), while having a very good appearance. For latte art type frothy milk, you should completely remove the metal attachment and keep the nozzle slightly submerged below the surface of the milk, while using a special metal jug for frothy milk.
Unfortunately, I will need to point out other flaws. As an 11-month user, I have already taken it for repair once, as a month later, the double espresso button started to dispense the quantity of a single cup. I could not fix the problem myself with a hard reset and the machine had to be reprogrammed by the dealership, which kept the coffee maker for about 2 weeks. However, I read from an annoyed commenter that both I and the dealership had not read the manual properly. He probably knows better. Regarding the aforementioned problem with the fine coffee grinds, it was not resolved, as it is a manufacturing flaw.
Now I had to take it for repair a second time and fortunately the warranty has not expired yet. During the frothy milk preparation, the plastic nozzle was ejected into the small jug with the frothy milk, splashing hot milk all over the place. It swelled like a balloon, and then ... pop! Perfect? The best part is that I will receive the device after a month, as the entire frothy milk production system needs to be replaced (a special order needs to be made).
Now about descaling: The overall process is complicated, lasts about 30 minutes, and requires your continuous presence to switch between flow from the nozzle and flow from the coffee filter. In addition, it splashes all over the counter, as for about 30 minutes it ejects water from the nozzle into a container that you should place underneath and gradually fill with water. If you search on the internet, you will surely find some hacks for this, apart from constantly holding the container with your hand at a specific height, like the friend here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9zvVWZTchg) or constantly wiping your counter with a towel.
In summary, I consider this coffee maker to be one that instead of making coffee for you, needs you to... fix it yourself! To procure the necessary grinder to grind the coffee to the "correct" size, to find the "correct" coffee grinder and the "correct" brand of coffee, not to make the "perfect" coffee for you, but to avoid clogging. You will need to make sure that your cross does not break outside the warranty and have infinite patience and specialized knowledge to adjust to its needs, sometimes even procure a saw or an angle grinder to make your coffee with some patents, but having risked everything regarding the warranty.

I received the machine today, having now realized how much better a cappuccino an old and much cheaper espresso machine made, which I used in the meantime. And this for the simplest reason that its basket was the right size and shape (it could fit two coffee measures and had enough holes in its base). So I did what so many others do: I cut the plastic cover of the filter holder (initially I removed it completely, but the coffee splattered everywhere while ruining the crema) and put another basket from a broken espresso machine I had, with a diameter of 51mm. And behold: the cappuccino tastes like coffee again, while I won't need to throw it away (for now at least).

I now use a much better espresso machine (Sage Bambino Plus) and sent this one to work. However, I want to emphasize something very important: The patent with the non-pressurized basket and the supply of a good grinder can be done with any espresso machine on the market. This will greatly upgrade the quality of the coffee, whichever espresso machine you have, as long as you find the right grinding settings (I have a Sage Smart Grinder Pro). So I don't understand why this should be an exclusive feature of this particular machine at the moment you should even cut off its plastic part. Today I tried this exactly on a much cheaper Arielli, without having to ruin any part of it, and indeed the coffee came out much better in taste, better than that of Delonghi. I think the main reasons why this particular coffee maker is so popular are its appearance, some automations, and the fact that it heats up relatively quickly.

It seems that Delonghi finally recognized the manufacturing flaw with the double basket of the Dedica that only holds 14 grams of coffee and makes it watery. They released their new model that holds 16 grams, but still without a non-pressurized basket. It is the Dedica Arte. There is also the Dedica Maestro, with a non-pressurized basket and many other features that significantly increase its price
This is the second one I am getting. I retired the first one after 5 years of operation, out of fear it might break and I wouldn't have coffee!!! Subjective opinion, but I find it perfect!!! WARNING it doesn't want finely ground coffee, like illy, because it clogs

Very good machine, very vfm for its price. The coffee it makes is very high quality and far better than many cafes outside that serve you water with a hint of coffee. To achieve this, of course, I got a few things that cost around 60 euros, but the coffee has improved a lot. 1) A cut portafilter (unpressurized) 2) a basket 16-18 g because it only has up to 14-16 g 3) a 51mm tamper because it has a plastic one that is also a bit crooked 4) if you don't already have a precision scale, it would be very good to get one. 5) One thing I see hasn't been mentioned much in reviews is that to get into this path, you definitely need a grinder; otherwise, it's better to use what the machine has and get coffee from the supermarket (which is coarser). The grinder is more important than the espresso machine, so if you invest in a good grinder, you will be very satisfied with the coffee it produces. Also, of course, you shouldn't be discouraged by the results at first; it takes a bit of effort, not as much as some describe that you have to spend a lot of money on coffees before you succeed, but it will definitely help a lot to watch videos and forums to learn about grams of grind/extraction, seconds, etc. etc
Good machine especially for beginners. Good coffee even from several cafes. For better results, find a blend from roasteries and a ground portafilter.
Both my wife and I (she is more particular than I am) have cut out coffee from outside. The coffee he makes is really very good. First, get informed about some basic principles in espresso coffee preparation (brewing ratio and extraction times) and then you are ready for many good coffees! 1.5 years of use and it still works like the first day.
Excellent Coffee Maker AS LONG AS you use it CORRECTLY. Specifically:
1) Follow the instructions in the manual to the letter.
2) Correct setting for water hardness; for Athens, since the water has low minerals, use light hardness, while in Thessaloniki and other areas, the hardness is medium and elsewhere the water is hard. Generally, you can see this from EYDAP data on water hardness in your area; if it doesn't mention hardness, look for CaCO3, the machine's instructions state the ratios and the corresponding hardness.
3) Correct temperature setting. I drink 100% Arabica, and for such varieties, high temperature is the best. I know that Robusta doesn't require such high temperature, but I haven't tested either Robusta or even 80% Arabica 20% Robusta, simply because Robusta makes the coffee more bitter.
4) The coffee must be well ground; if it is finely or coarsely ground, the result will be terrible. Personally, I preferred ground coffee, specifically the Black Bart Coffee Espresso Single Origin, and the result is perfect.
5) The coffee must be tamped well and evenly. The tamper that comes with the machine is mediocre, to say the least. At first, it was difficult for me, but now I tamp the coffee perfectly even with this tamper; the way I do it is by gently rotating the tamper around to create an even and flat surface, and then I press down with my fingers at the base of the tamper (normally you press from the top, but as mentioned, this tamper is problematic for that). At some point, I will get a good one
The machine is consistent and reliable. The water heats up quickly and the extraction duration is sufficient for our coffee to be aromatic and flavorful. For the past year that I have owned the machine, I have been able to enjoy better coffee at home compared to what many stores offer. I highly recommend the machine.
For its money, it's fine. Compared to a gaggia classic that I have at home and have been using daily for years, the De'Longhi is inferior but if you want a low budget solution this De'Longhi will pleasantly surprise you. For a hot espresso, its pressurized filter basket produces a very satisfactory crema from ready-cut lavazza coffee from the supermarket. With a little practice and adjustment, it is a very good entry level tool.
The coffee maker broke down in two years with moderate use without being pressured. Unfortunately, it didn't prove to be as good as the name it carries.
Very good, even for someone who has no experience in using these machines ... the result depends on the coffee of course, but it is comparable and maybe even better than coffee in a café
Excellent machine for its price. I have had it for about 2 years, the only downside is that its portafilter does not hold enough coffee for the freddo espresso and I had to buy another one. This is of course subjective, but I needed a larger coffee dose and with its portafilter, I often had to make 2 doses.

It has its peculiarities. Second day of use, everything works fine. At least for me. With ground coffee at 2.5 from a coffee shop.
With one scoop fill, in any portafilter and pressing single dose. I drank very good coffee.
When I put two scoops it sticks and doesn't come out at all. Probably needs a bottomless portafilter, maybe even a different grind. So now this is how I will proceed, I do two fills, two singles and I get a pretty good fredo.
There are issues like grind-basket-machine relationship. If you want to make a third coffee in a row you have to let it cool down because it will come out burnt. And maybe other issues.
Overall it is a great value for money purchase if you adapt to its capabilities.

Awesome! It is semi-automatic and accurately measures the time on its own, depending on the coffee grind and water temperature. It is very compact and fits everywhere!
The coffee is unfortunately like water... The filter cup allows you to put very little coffee... If you put more, it bursts and doesn't release it... The frothy milk is just milk with bubbles of water... This is the 5th coffee maker I've changed in 20 years and it's the worst of all... Even worse than my first one, a Krups... I honestly don't understand the reviews... They probably have never had good coffee in their lives.

The Delonghi Dedica espresso machine has been one of the most popular choices in the market for espresso lovers worldwide, not only in Greece!
The model of this review is the Delonghi Dedica EC685 and it is an ideal and affordable espresso machine for simple users who just want a decent espresso at home without much hassle, as well as for those who want to take advantage of its capabilities.
After almost a decade of admiring it, it was time to try it out!
First Impressions
One of the features that have made it so popular is its slim and compact design. The Delonghi Dedica EC685 is only 15 cm wide and 30 cm tall, allowing it to not take up much space on the counter. Its casing is made of good quality plastic, with necessary metallic elements.
On the top front, there are 3 function buttons for single and double shots and for activating the steam. On the top, there is a metal cup warmer base that also functions as a heating element to keep cups warm and ready at the right temperature for coffee.
On the right side, there is the nozzle for frothing milk, which has two operating options, for heating milk and frothing milk. At the back, there is the removable 1-liter water tank.
Under the portafilter holder, there is a base with a removable drip tray and liquid level indicator. The base can be removed to reveal an additional base, which allows for increasing the distance from the spout for taller cups up to 12cm.
In the package, you will find the 51mm portafilter, 3 pressurized filter baskets for single and double shots, as well as for use with ESE Pods. There is also a plastic dosing/tamper and a box with the powder for descaling.
The power of the Delonghi Dedica EC685 is 1300 Watts, pressure 15 bar, and it is ready for use in just 30 seconds. The machine has a thermoblock, meaning that coffee brewing and steam production are done alternately and not simultaneously.
Testing
I tested the Delonghi Dedica EC685 for 3 weeks, using 3 different types of espresso, ready-made, freshly ground from a well-known coffee chain, and freshly ground at home with the Delonghi grinder, the KG79, another popular device in its category. I will have the review of it down in the description when it is ready for you to take a look.
So, what was the result and the user experience?
Let's start with the basics. In all 3 cases of coffee grinding/types, the result was very nice and tasty espresso, with the corresponding crema. Of course, it took some trials with the home-ground coffee until I achieved the right grind.
From the well-known coffee chain, the suggestion of the staff there for a grind at 2.5 worked perfectly. It is a grind that works fine in most economical home espresso machines. This also applies to the pre-packaged coffee.
The factory settings of the extraction buttons are 45ml for a single shot and 90ml for a double shot. The respective filter baskets hold 7 and 14 grams of coffee. The general recommendation for espresso is a ratio of 1 to 2 or 3, depending on the coffee and preferences. I set the buttons to 3 and something, so that in a single dose I have 25 grams of espresso and in the double dose about 50 grams in the double to satisfy the needs of the freddo.
Of course, the buttons are programmable and you can set the amount of extraction yourself, by holding it down for as many seconds as necessary and releasing it when you have the desired quantity.
You can also program the water hardness, water temperature, and activate the descaling function from the buttons.
The machine is ready in 30 seconds from activation. For optimal results, it would be good to run the single or double dose 1-2 times with the filter holder without coffee before the first preparation, so that all the components, both internal and external, warm up.
As for the milk frother, as usual, it takes a little practice until you achieve the right result. The Dedica does it perfectly and the milk froth is velvety and has the right texture. However, I would always recommend buying a milk frother device, as apart from the incredible convenience it offers and the consistent performance, it can also make cold milk froth for other beverages. Of course, this applies to regular everyday users, as more advanced users may disagree and want to control every parameter of the process.
With extra accessories
As I mentioned before, the Delonghi Dedica EC685 (and the other models in the series) is popular for the ease with which you can upgrade your coffee experience with just 2 steps. The first step requires removing the panarello from the milk frother nozzle to have more control in the preparation.
The second and most important step is to replace the portafilter ideally with a bottomless one and with a compatible non-pressurized basket. The non-pressurized basket, or otherwise known as a single bottom, allows us to define the result, having full control of the process from the grind level to the coffee in the cup. I would definitely like to try the second step, unfortunately, the machine is not mine, I bought it as a gift for a family member, otherwise, I would have already purchased an additional portafilter and basket to practice my barista skills.
Final Impressions
The Delonghi Dedica EC685 is one of the few models at €150 and something that is worth buying if you want to have decent espresso at home, and with the addition of the extra portafilter, you can elevate it.
It goes without saying that even more affordable models can achieve good espresso, like the IQ in a previous review, but as with most things, the higher you go in budget, the better the result.
So, I recommend it if you are looking for an espresso machine to save on delivery expenses and even if you want to dedicate time to upgrade your coffee experience at home.
Undoubtedly the best choice at this price. Easy to use, easy to clean, and with good quality materials. As a home machine and not a professional one, it is decent for both hot and cold coffee. In any case, you need to experiment until you achieve the desired result for your coffee. And above all, read the instructions carefully to properly program the machine.
Personally, I only struggled with the milk frother, but the mistake was mine until I figured out the proper way to prepare it. I tried different temperatures with the milk and eventually the perfect frothed milk is made at 55-60 degrees Celsius, with any type of milk.
It is better to purchase a better tamper (because the one it comes with is plastic and can easily break) and the machine is value for money in every aspect.
I have it for more than a month and I declare myself excited.

For the money, it is the best available. For quick coffee, get capsules. For good coffee, it is the bitter choice. If you find the variety that suits you, you will not buy from outside again.
I have it for about 6 months, it makes very good coffee, worth the money. I buy ready-ground coffee now, the next purchase will be a good grinder
The machine is very good for this price range.
IMPORTANT: everyone should buy a better tamper for about 15 euros, because the one it comes with is not good.
You can use it as it comes out of the box (except for the tamper), with the pressurized basket and medium quality ground coffee, and it will give you a decent espresso but quite honest and good coffee at home. However, if you combine it with a non-pressurized basket and a grinder, then it goes up a few levels and will give you coffee that is definitely better than some coffees outside.
It will definitely not give you the perfect result, but if you get involved and experiment with times, coffees, etc., the result will reward you. To reach a higher level in the taste of coffee than what this machine offers, you have to spend 500 euros.
