The present study deals with the history of the Metropolis of Metra and Athyra from its establishment until today. This Metropolis has a significant ecclesiastical, spiritual, educational, social, and philanthropic activity. This is evidenced by the archive of the Metropolis of Metra and Athyra, as well as other unpublished and published sources. [...]
Based on the above, I divided my work into six chapters as follows:
The first chapter refers to the historical elements of the towns of Metra and Athyra from the pre-Christian period to the present day. The political and administrative division of the Sanjak of Metra and its population are also presented.
The second chapter deals with the ecclesiastical history of the province. The two initially independent bishoprics of Metra and Athyra are presented, which were later merged into one bishopric with the title of Metra and Athyra, which was then promoted to a metropolis. The seat of the province of Metra and Athyra, its jurisdiction, the duties of the hierarchs, the communities, the churches, the sanctifications, the chapels, and the population exchange (1923) are also examined.
The third chapter, which consists of three subchapters, deals with the educational situation of the schools of the Metra community. The first subchapter discusses the schools, the second subchapter discusses the teaching, the duties of the teachers and students based on the regulations of the schools in 1875, the school holidays, and the third subchapter discusses the finances of the schools (income and expenses), the salaries of the teachers, and the endowments.
The fourth chapter examines the economic situation of the metropolis in two subchapters. The first presents the properties of the Metra community, such as shops, farms, vineyards, pastures, etc., while the second presents the income and expenses of the province of Metra and Athyra. The chapter concludes with a reference to the archiepiscopal subsidy.
The fifth chapter discusses the administrative organization of the province of Metra and Athyra, which is divided into two subchapters. The first refers to the general regulations of the province of Metra in 1914, while the second discusses the administrative bodies of the province: Provincial Assembly, Mixed Provincial Council, Community Assemblies, Demogerontia, Supervisory Committee, Ecclesiastical Committee, and Administration. The duties of the Mukhtar (president) of Metra are also mentioned.
The sixth chapter is dedicated to the clergy of the province of Metra and Athyra, as well as the various positions held by the province in the Canons and Constitutions of the Ecumenical Throne. I present complete, in my opinion, for the first time, episcopal lists of the bishops of Metra and Athyra and the subsequent bishopric and metropolis of Metra and Athyra. The names of the priests and deacons of the Metra community (1577-1924) are also mentioned. Finally, there is a discussion of the positions held by the two independent bishoprics of Metra and Athyra in the Canons and Constitutions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which were later merged into one bishopric that was then promoted to a metropolis.
The study is accompanied by maps of the area, unpublished documents, and rich photographic material. [...]
