Description

After 2010, civil society moved forward in a contradictory way. On the one hand, it became the space in which citizens, having distanced themselves from traditional political participation through parties, exercised their rights and asserted claims against the state with greater intensity and frequency than in the past. This is obviously beneficial to democracy, given that the latter is the quintessential participatory regime. On the other hand, civil society also became the space for the emergence and promotion of groups and movements that do not simply seek confrontation with the institutions of the democratic regime, but their overthrow or subversion. In summary, the crisis acted as a catalyst for the empowerment of civil society, which unfolded in democratic and anti-democratic directions.
