March 1902. In a riverside settlement in Cappadocia, while the boatman Dimitros sees the waters of the river turning red, his sickly daughter Niobe is born.
Her fellow villagers will label her as shadowy and grant her freedoms inappropriate for a female, believing that she is destined to live among them for only a short time. But the girl proves them wrong.
Time passes, the Balkan Wars and the Great War come, and the harmonious relationship between Greeks and Turks is tested. The great poverty afflicts the settlement and especially Niobe's family. Until one day, while the Empire groans like the dragon under Saint George's spear, from Greek sovereignty in Smyrna, a prominent Turk is enchanted by her blue eyes and is burning to possess her.
Since she was young, she has given her love to the rebellious Philip, who opens the door like a conqueror. But the young man has long been lost, chasing his own dreams in Constantinople, Odessa, and battlefields, and she only has a locket secretly binding her to him.
And then comes the Catastrophe and the Exchange...
A ship sets sail, dividing her soul in two. One piece remains behind, in the old homeland; the other in the new, the primordial one, where life awaits to test its endurance, as well as that of Philip.
The life of the last Greeks in a small corner of Cappadocia, and simultaneously the story of an indestructible but hopeless love in the shadow of the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the Population Exchange.
