Description

In 2010, as part of a retrospective of Marina Abramović's career at MoMA, over 750,000 people stood in line to sit across from her and communicate with her non-verbally in an unprecedented durational performance that lasted over 700 hours. That almost fifty-year celebration of pioneering performance art once again proved that Marina Abramović is a true force of nature.

The daughter of communists and heroes of World War II, Marina grew up in post-war Yugoslavia under Tito and was raised with a strict work ethic. Even when she began building her international career as an artist, she lived under the suffocating control of her mother, forced to return home every night by ten. However, nothing could suppress her insatiable curiosity, her desire to connect with people, or her characteristic Balkan sense of humor, elements that fuel her art and her life. The core of it.

Passing Through Walls is a love story that seems to be taken from an opera, the twelve-year collaboration with her performance artist partner Ulay, which largely unfolded in absolute poverty, inside a van that traversed all of Europe. Their relationship experienced great moments and ended dramatically on the Great Wall of China. Her story, sometimes moving, sometimes epic, sometimes bitingly funny, describes an unparalleled artistic career in which she pushed her body beyond the limits of fear, pain, exhaustion, and danger, in an unwavering search for emotional and spiritual transformation. The autobiography "Passing Through Walls" is itself a remarkable performance in which an extraordinary artist vividly and intensely narrates her unparalleled life.
