Description

In this book, the effects of globalization on the political system, historical consciousness, and social identity of the United Kingdom, a state-laboratory of modern capitalism, are examined. The aim is to form a scientific model for the way globalization affects the construction of modern nation-states and societies.

The fundamental role of the new historical consciousness that societies acquire through the revision of their own history is highlighted, which in the case of the United Kingdom mainly refers to its two empires. As argued, the modification of historical consciousness has direct implications for society. It is linked to the problems created by the model of multicultural society as well as domestic terrorism. The ambivalence of the United Kingdom between the EU and the US, which has historical and social causes, is examined. It is connected to conflicting interests within the peculiar British capitalism. Globalization has direct implications for the political system of the United Kingdom. It generates the trend of "presidentialization and internalization". The asymmetrical decentralization that has taken place in recent years. It repositions the Irish issue, Scottish nationalism, and the distinctiveness of Welsh culture.

The author concludes that the political system in the era of globalization is characterized by delays compared to other social activities and tends to resort more easily to non-democratic "solutions" rather than seeking, as it should, new democratic practices.
