Description
From the state of the 19th century to the strong Greek Republic of the 21st
"The Military History of Modern Greece" is above all a reading of patriotism, which presents with clarity our adventurous journey to national integration. Avoiding common exaggerations, the historians who sign this three-volume work record not only heroism and self-sacrifice, but also the mistakes that marked the struggles of the Greeks in the 20th century.
The joy of Liberation from German occupation does not last long for our country. While the rest of the world rebuilds the ruins from World War II, the Greeks engage in a merciless civil strife. Emerging from the Civil War, Greece finds itself in the Cold War aligned with the West. It participates in the Korean campaign, while the Cyprus issue becomes a major national issue that, from the 1950s to the present day, determines relations of suspicion with its major allies. At the same time, however, our country recovers from the wounds of Occupation and the Civil War, tries to restore democratic institutions, and becomes a full and equal member of the most powerful international organizations.
The third volume contains the chapters:
- IA: Stathis Kalyvas, Nikos Marantzidis, "The Civil War" (with bibliography)
- IB: Evanthi Chatzivasileiou, "Surviving in the Post-War World" (with bibliography)
- IC: Ioannis Stefanidis, "The Cyprus Issue, 1950-1974" (with bibliography)
- Anthology of texts on the Cyprus Issue
- Timeline: Greece
