Ten years ago, Calamity came into the world.

It appeared as a blinding light in the sky and bestowed superhuman powers upon a multitude of ordinary people. Filled with fear and awe, the rest of the world began to call these people Epics. However, Epics are not friendly towards humanity. Along with their incredible abilities, they acquired a passion for power, and absolute power requires the destruction of free human spirit.

In our time, in the place where the city of Chicago once stood, the all-powerful Epic known as Steelheart rules as a tyrant, endowed with incredible physical strength and the ability to control the elements of nature. Rumors say that bullets cannot harm him, that no blade can wound him, that fire does not touch him... He is invulnerable, unbeatable. No one dares to resist him. No one... except the Reckoners.
The Reckoners are a mysterious group of ordinary people who have dedicated their lives to studying the Epics. Their goal is to discover their weaknesses and eventually succeed in annihilating them. Young David wants more than anything in the world to become a member of the Reckoners.

Shortly after his arrival in Chicago, Steelheart murdered David's father. Just like the Reckoners, David has been studying the Epics for years, devising plans for their elimination. His greatest weapon in this endeavor, however, is not an object but a memory, which the Reckoners need to fulfill their mission.
