Description

A biting, deeply political satire about the identity of modern America, a novel that describes the eccentric upbringing of an African American and an unprecedented trial in the history of the United States. The narrator, born in the "rural ghetto" of Dickens in Los Angeles, fatalistically accepts the margins. He is raised by his father, an eccentric scientist, who uses him as a guinea pig in his heretical psychological studies on racism. The son believes that his father's pioneering work—and a book that will cause a sensation when published—will solve their financial problems. But when police officers kill his father, the protagonist realizes that the only thing he has in his hands is a funeral bill. Driven by the frustration and decline of his place, he takes an outrageous initiative: the reinstatement of slavery and racial segregation, which will lead him to stand trial as a defendant in the country's Supreme Court.

"The Sellout" by Paul Beatty marks the creative pinnacle of a brilliant author. The book was awarded the Booker Prize in 2016. In 2015, it won the National Book Critics Circle Award in the USA.
