Description

This edition was made on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition organized by the National Bank Cultural Foundation at the bookstore of MIET on Amerikis Street 13 (December 2, 2015 to February 27, 2016). The creator of the publishing house Kastalia was the German-Russian Herman Kaufman, who came to Greece in 1920, after the Bolsheviks prevailed in Russia. Kaufman, who had a good education, initially sold used French books with a cart. However, as his business grew rapidly, he relocated his bookselling activity to the Ephesus Mansion on Stadiou Street 28. Kaufman's bookstore quickly became the center of foreign language books in Athens. In early 1934, Kaufman founded the publishing company Kastalia, which from its first appearance showed the book lovers of Athens that it had particularly high goals. The new publishing house gathered the literary avant-garde of the time. Terzakis, Theotokas, Seferis, Empeirikos, Myrivillis, Venezi, and others of the '30s generation published their works at Kastalia, while among the collaborators was K.T. Dimaras. The peak period of Kastalia was limited to only two or three years, specifically from its foundation in 1934 until around mid-1936. During this period, Kastalia published about 28 titles, significantly upgrading the quality of the books with good paper, designs by well-known artists, numbered copies, etc. The imposition of the dictatorship on August 4, 1936 was decisive for Kastalia, which was forced to significantly limit its publishing activities. The final blow came with the Nazi invasion (April 1941). The life of Kastalia was very short. However, it was decisive in shaping the future course of Greek literary books. It paved the way for young writers, whose dynamic presence would determine the intellectual path of the nation immediately after the war.
