With this book, the author's two-volume work on "red violence" during the period 1943-1950 is completed.
In this book, Sakis Moumtzis attempts to answer the fundamental question of whether the civil war was an attempt by the KKE leadership to integrate the internal political situation into the international crisis environment that began to take shape in Europe and the Balkans, or whether it was a social revolution due to the exacerbation of conditions in Greece. Whether it was an attempt by the third-internationalist leadership of the KKE to avoid integrating the party into the processes of bourgeois parliamentary democracy, which they did not believe in, or whether it was the result of "White Terror" and the choices of the Anglo-American factor.
The author examines the contribution of the people's democracies to the onset of the civil war, as well as the conditions under which it was conducted in cities and the countryside. He attempts to document the collective availabilities, the underground and visible currents of civil war society. With a subversive perspective, he examines the issues of Makronisos, the Extraordinary Military Courts, and the events in the Peloponnese. He records and analyzes the strategy of the KKE and developments both in the political arena and on the battlefields after 1946. Moumtzis clearly shows how political decisions intertwine with military developments and how the latter largely determine the character of the post-civil war political system in Greece.
As Nikos Marantzidis mentions in the book's introduction, "The 'Red Violence' is one of the best texts for historical understanding of the logic, strategy, and internal contradictions of the communist Left. Moumtzis may not be a professional historian, but he proves to be an excellent connoisseur of the ideological and organizational world of the KKE, and at the same time, he is a keen political analyst of the communist phenomenon, able to understand the political imperatives, plans, and obstacles that the KKE faced in that given historical context."
