Description

This book is a unique historical document that is a reference point in Greek and international literature for the period of the National Resistance in Greece (1941-1945). This comprehensive edition, with the addition of testimonies and texts that were omitted from the first publishing presentation, arouses additional interest because it reveals other unknown events and aspects of that struggle.

Giorgos Kotzioulas, who knew and lived closely with the chief captain of ELAS, Aris Velouchiotis, exposes with direct and vivid manner the personality and actions of the chief captain of ELAS and his comrades, through his memories and testimonies, which were written either during the events or a few months after Aris' death.

In this work, Kotzioulas does not aim to write history or serve any purposes, but to present things as he experienced them, with the authentic dialogues of the protagonists. Through these texts, the reader will experience the immediacy of the moments, reconstruct the "ethos" of the characters, and delve into the motives of the "actions" that defined the resistance struggle, both of the protagonists and the people.

Because it is the first text written immediately after the death of Aris Velouchiotis, by a seasoned and acclaimed writer, one of the few who went to the mountains near the militant resistance groups during the occupation, it has special value because it is direct and authentic, without avoiding to address the "flawed texts" of that struggle.
