Description

The great revolution of the 20th and 21st centuries in the natural sciences changed our perception of the world. Relativity, quantum mechanics, the cosmology of the Big Bang, and the recent theories of strings and loops fundamentally overturned the old, static, and mechanistic worldview of classical physics, constructing a historical and materialistic image of nature. Biology completed Darwin's work, revealing the secrets of life.
In "The Great Physicists," Christos Kefalis examines the contribution of the most prominent physicists who laid the foundation for and advanced the great scientific revolution, from Einstein and Bohr to Hawking and other contemporary successors. He argues that the worldview that emerges from their discoveries is centered around the concepts of contradiction, self-existence, and self-evolution of nature, which are at the core of Marxist dialectics. At the same time, he highlights the atheistic and radical conclusions drawn by these leading physicists.

The book examines a total of 23 top scientists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The reader will find texts about Einstein, the protagonists of quantum theory, Bohr, Heisenberg, Dirac, and their successors Feynman and Gell-Mann. Developments in cosmology are presented through the work of Hawking, Linde, Guth, Turok, and Steinhardt, as well as Immanuel Kant, who anticipated many of the modern ideas. Efforts to unify the fundamental forces of nature through theories of strings, loops, etc., are discussed with reference to the work of Wittenberg, Kakou, Schwarz, Green, Gross, Witten, Smolin, and Rovelli. The book concludes with an overview of the contributions of three top biologists, Crick, Mayer, and Dawkins.

Thus, the author seeks to highlight the succession of scientific theories as a dialectical development of interconnected moments towards a unified understanding of nature.
