Description

In the stadiums, Greece does not just sigh. It also chants. And sings. Divided into teams, but also into gates. The fans (the term "supporters" is simply euphemistic) shout their slogans, usually in verse and rhyming, and sing on well-known rhythms, from the National Anthem to partisan songs, and from Tsitsanis to carols. Thus, they merge into a community that dissolves every weekend and is recreated with a different composition each time. The only constant is the "idea", the "religion", the "drug": the jersey. And - for the overwhelmingly majority - the selfless passion for it.

With their songs and slogans, the fans want to inspire the players of their beloved team, because any result other than victory, no matter who the opponent is, is inconceivable. However, they also want to mock the players (and fans) of the opposing club, to undermine their morale. The official rhetoric about fair play and Greece as the cradle, etc. does not concern them.

The language of stadium slogans and songs is heavily ironic and sexist, vulgar but also humorous, violent but occasionally tender (when dedicated to hymns), creating a form of anonymous, popular poetry. A folk lyricism that, although "low", reveals not only the world of fans' emotions but also their perceptions of something more than just the field.
