Berlin, 1943.
Bernie Gunther has left the Political Police and is working at the German War Crimes Office in Berlin. Within the Office circles, there are reports about the existence of a mass grave in the Katyn Forest, near Smolensk in German-occupied Russia; a wolf, digging the ground in the forest, has unearthed human remains. No one knows to whom they belong. There are suspicions that the grave is filled with dead Polish soldiers executed by the Soviets. For the German Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, proving the guilt of the Russians will lead with mathematical precision to the disintegration of the unity of the Allied Forces.
But what will happen if the truth is different? Bernie Gunther is called to unravel the thread. Confronted with the harsh reality, he realizes that the truth is yet another victim of the war.
