Description

This book contains historical documents that have been the subject of research and commentary in international literature, as they concern one of the few cases of guerrilla theater in world history. It includes theatrical plays, exhibitions, and journals of the establishment and operation of a theater group, the "People's Stage," composed of amateur actors-fighters of our National Resistance 1941-45, which traveled to liberated areas of Greece to entertain and uplift the spirits of the Greek fighters and to promote culture among the mentally oppressed rural population, many of whom were seeing theater for the first time.

George Kotzioulas - already a recognized writer - was the creator and soul of this effort, serving as the artistic director of the 8th division of ELAS. With energy and simplicity, he organized the guerrilla group of actors-artists and with plays that he wrote on the spot, according to the circumstances, he contributed his own struggle to the collective effort for national liberation.

These plays, which are one-act comedies and a fairy tale drama, address situations that were subjects of popular reflection in the years before the war and during the Occupation. Phenomena such as factionalism, emigration, abuse of power, dictatorship, censorship, and the exploitation of people are the themes of Kotzioulas. Laughter and entertainment play a central role in these comedies, providing relaxation and relief for the guerrillas from the worries and hardships of battle, and serving as a source of culture, amusement, and joy for the rural population.

With his theatrical pen, Kotzioulas, in difficult circumstances, creates one-act plays during each tour of the theater group, often satirizing situations and characters - using local dialects - and revealing unknown events, such as the sufferings of the Jews or mistakes in the management of the struggle.

The immediacy and relevance of the works, combined with Kotzioulas' enjoyable writing style, make this book a valuable acquisition for every reader, as it provides a genuine sample of "Greek Popular Theater" during the period of the Occupation and the Resistance.
