Description
Unfeeling moralist and satirist, descendant of Aristophanes and Plautus, Molière, Nestrou, Zirondou, Pirandello, Ventekind and Wilder, becomes a critic of his social whole on a large scale. For him, society is not a circle of privileged classes exclusively, or a traditionally known way of life: In his opinion, society consists of people who live according to the same rule or are under the same weight of the dawn of a new civilization. His social critique is a critique of culture.
It has all the means of satire, grotesque, parody and irony and suddenly of metaphysically generated tragedy. The parable of "The Visit of the Old Lady" is one of the most important works of social criticism of our time.
In his essay "Problems of the Theater" (1955) he declares that today comedy is the only scenic form through which the tragic element is achieved, as in Shakespeare. With his works, he does not want to give "too cheap consolation" or, much more, to tell the truth "with adventure" and he does not want at all, at all, "to make his audience angry". He knows the "absurdity" of this world, but he is not disappointed "because, even if we have very few chances to save it - God have mercy on us for that - we could still face it..."
