Description

Dirty, blasphemous, obscene, and ultimately unreadable is how many have characterized Joyce's book Ulysses. "It is a book to which we all owe and from which none of us can escape," writes Thomas Eliot. Be that as it may, it is a book that revolutionized literature and the way we see it today. A book where Irish lyricism and Irish vulgarity reach their extremes, composing an Apollonian and Dionysian amalgam.

In "Ulysses," Joyce records the thoughts and actions of real people, even the most vile and obscene. In his effort to create a modern hero, he returns to the Homeric epic of the Odyssey and deconstructs the Greek hero, the versatile Odysseus, into a parody of the "wandering Jew." In place of the Homeric Odysseus, he places Odysseus-Bloom, characterized by humble human activities and qualities, which are described in detail in the work.

Through the eyes of "Ulysses," Dublin on June 16, 1904, a day like any other, perhaps not so ordinary for Joyce (on this day he had his first date with Nora Barnacle, with whom he lived for 30 years before marrying), becomes the universe of humans, history, religion, patriotism, lust, betrayal. Almost every form of human experience, thoughts, emotions, memories flows, with the technique of the internal monologue, into the stream of the subconscious and is expressed by describing the real life of the city and its people, in one day.

The book is a mirror held up to life, made of words that speak of all things "human." Intentions, desires, hidden and revealed, vices, yearnings, dreams, disappointments, hopes emerge from the gaps left by the words, depicting life as it is: fragmented, distorted, blurry, disjointed.
