Description

As the 20th century draws to a close, the USA has emerged as the sole global superpower. However, the critical question facing America remains unanswered: What should the global American strategy be to maintain the USA's prominent position in the world?
"The Grand Chessboard" presents Brzezinski's bold and provocative geostrategic vision for ensuring American supremacy into the 21st century. Central to his analysis is how the USA will wield power politics over the vast Eurasian landmass, which is home to the majority of the world's population and the location of most natural resources and significant economic activity. Stretching from Portugal to the Bering Strait and from Lapland to Malaysia, Eurasia is the "grand chessboard" on which America's primacy will either be recognized or challenged in the coming years. America's task, according to Zbigniew Brzezinski, is to manage conflicts and relationships in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East so that no rival superpower emerges capable of threatening the interests and prosperity of the USA.
The critical issues may seem familiar, but the collapse of the Soviet Union has created new rivalries and new relationships. Zbigniew Brzezinski maps out the new geostrategic realities.
-Why France and Germany will play the role of geopolitical pivots, while Britain and Japan do not assume a similar role.
-Why the expansion of NATO offers Russia the opportunity to correct past mistakes and why it cannot blow this chance.
-Why the fate of Ukraine and Azerbaijan is so important to America.
-Why considering China as a threat by Americans can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
-Why America is not only the first truly global power but also the last, and what the implications are for its legacy for future generations of Americans.

Before reading this book, you should keep in mind 2 very important things:
    1. Who was Brezhinsky who wrote it.
    2. When it was written and what it is about.

Zbigniew Brzezinski was the national security advisor to the US during the presidency of Jimmy Carter, one of the founders of the famous Trilateral Commission (a club of top politicians and businessmen from America, Europe, and Japan), as well as an advisor to Obama, the Rockefellers, etc.
He was the main "hawk" of the Democrats who marked the period of the Cold War.
Brezhinsky, of Polish descent and a member of an aristocratic family, was characterized by his hatred towards the Soviet Union, believing that its expansion should be severed at all costs. A position he supported in all the positions he served and marked an entire period in American foreign policy.

"Brezhinsky was nominally a Democrat (...). However, his deep animosity towards the USSR placed him on the right side of many Republicans, even Henry Kissinger or Richard Nixon," wrote the New York Times.

Among other things, Brzezinski supported US involvement in Vietnam, as well as economic and military aid to Islamist rebels (Taliban) fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan.
A decision that the US paid dearly for.

Brezhinsky was also the inspiration behind the failed operation to free the hostages at the American embassy in Tehran in 1980, which led to the resignation of then Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance.

His work "The Grand Chessboard," published in 1997, was essentially his proposal for the policy that the US should follow.

Brzezinski saw his dream, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, become a reality. However, he warned that American hegemony in the world cannot last for more than one generation because either it would provoke strong reactions from the rest of the world that would undermine it, or the American public opinion would tire of paying for and exercising this hegemony.
