Description

"The prophets had foretold my birth. I was born at the end of the constellation of Aries, and when the fullness of time comes, I will replace the Great God, Ammon Zeus, in worship.

The poets celebrated my achievements. My power and bravery were unparalleled. The gods helped me fulfill my purposes more than anyone else. The peoples of three continents submitted to my will. Life and death lost their value for me. No one has conquered an empire as vast as mine, fought more battles, or founded more cities. No one has subjugated more nations than me.

I was never defeated by anyone, except myself. I ascended to the realm of the gods alongside Achilles, Hercules, and Dionysus. Incense burned at my altars. Countless armies were my admirers. My example will remain unforgettable and unsurpassed throughout the ages. And when the kingdom of Ammon Zeus fades away and darkness covers the temples of Egypt, then my origin and nature will remain an eternal enigma for the human spirit."

(From the book by French academic Maurice Druon, "Alexandre le Grand ou le Roman d'un Dieu", Paris 1958, which suggests that if Alexander's tomb is ever found, a funerary column with the above text should be erected on it).

I have already read it three times since the day I bought it and I will do it again. It is a wonderful book and provides a lot of information about Alexander's complex personality. It should not be missing from any library.
