Description

"My brothers, if half of us are dishonorable and the others malicious, who is honorable? Do not insult our homeland, do not disgrace it. The Greek has inherent honor and wisdom, but discord is the enemy of his virtues. This star of ancient glory has faded, as sister cities armed against each other with hatred; and in our new struggle, preserving our enemies, it bound the cross to Byzantium. Let our enemies exhaust their insults; and if you feel strength in your nerves, you have something noble to spend it on. [...]"

Emmanuel Kouroulis, rich but of humble origin, a tailor from Syros, must become a Minister if he wants to win the heart and hand of the beautiful and ambitious Anthousa. With the help of Strobilis, his cunning servant, and with false promises, bribes, and intrigues, Kouroulis finally becomes a Minister - but for how long?

Alexandros Rizos Rangavis wrote "Kouroulis" in 1845, but the 21st-century viewer will have no difficulty believing that the work was written today. Nepotism, xenomania, imitation, corruption, and the buying of consciences are just some of the themes addressed in this political satire, which exposes all the shortcomings of Greek reality that have accompanied our mentality and state from its founding until today!
