Description

[set]

In this volume, with poems from 1943-1956, Kotzioulas follows his own solitary path. In this period, defined by the National Resistance, the civil war, and the defeat of the left-wing faction and its consequences, Kotzioulas' poetry becomes more dynamic, militant, and robust. It is the era in which the poet joins the EAM-ELAS and is one of the few intellectuals who follow the guerrillas, a guerrilla himself with his pen. Having personal involvement as a founder of the "Popular Stage" and as a companion of the resistance fighters against the invaders, he strives to describe and praise their achievements, adventures, sufferings, actions, characters, and their loss. Captains, like Velouchiotis, but also simple fighters of the struggle, with his verses, resonate as symbols of fighters worthy of the klephts and armatoloi of '21. He is fascinated, admires, incites, praises, glorifies, disappoints, judges, mourns. His poetry becomes epic. In these epics, his passion and faith in the struggle for national and social liberation are evident. And his verse, which was melodic until then, becomes solid, direct, concise, and Doric in order to harmonize with its content.

During the years of the civil war and the subsequent hardships, Kotzioulas, the bard of the defeated faction, with sadness, bitterness, and pain, mourning for the comrades who were lost, without ceasing to fight and judge situations and individuals, returns to find his strength in his refuge, his beloved poetry. He finds solace in nature and the memory of his homeland, with lyrical and at the same time dynamically renewing poetry. The final hymns of this sensitive and impoverished folk poet with the literary education are songs of joy and hope, inspired by his marriage and the birth of his son.
