The crime committed by the student Raskolnikov is a crime for which society itself is responsible. The premeditated murder of the old pawnbroker and the collateral -accidental- murder of her sister is a protest against social injustice and makes the perpetrator question whether he is the criminal or the victim. Dostoevsky, with "Crime and Punishment," blatantly presents us with the existential problem through the character of a perpetrator who became a murderer, protesting against the social injustice of the then Russian society, which is not much different from the societies of the present.

This contemplation of the hero makes the work timeless, with particular depth, and it is rightly considered one of the great novels of world literature.
