Description

"Because, in the end, no matter how much it costs us, every woman at some point in her life will be cheated on. It's like menopause, it may come a little earlier or a little later, but no one escapes it."

With this statement, Inés, the protagonist of Claudia Piñeiro's novel Yours Forever, accepts the revelation of her husband's infidelity. She, a housewife of the upper-middle class, has already accepted many things. Her husband's indifference and lack of affection, the absence of love in her life, her sulking and constantly critical teenage daughter, the incessant criticism from her own mother, the abandonment by her father. The only compensation for all these repeated frustrations is the image of a happy family. An image that exists solely in her own mind and is based mostly on the material benefits secured by her role as a wife.

In order to maintain this precious image intact, Inés will go as far as committing a crime, without hesitation, without feeling guilt or remorse. Cold and calculating, she will camouflage the deficit of her soul and conscience behind the patriarchal narrative of the tireless wife and mother who takes care of everyone and sacrifices herself for her loved ones.

Piñeiro's caustic prose creates a vivid literary depiction of the cold rage of a scorned woman and at the same time a humorous, sarcastic, yet surgically precise dissection of the upper-middle class of Argentina.
