For most philosophers, the Ego is a "resident" of consciousness. Some perceive its typical presence in the heart of experiences as an empty principle of unification. Others, mostly psychologists, believe they discover its material presence as a center of desires and actions in every moment of our mental life. We would like to show here that the Ego is neither formally nor materially within consciousness: it is outside of it, in the world. It is a being of the world, like the Ego of the other.
