The reconstruction of the Balkans has proven to be a difficult task. Despite the accession of Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia to the EU, there is still great uncertainty about the timeline for further EU enlargement in the region. In this sense, the region seems to be in a constant state of reconstruction.

This book sheds light on the symbolic aspects of this process. Undoubtedly, the mirror of former Yugoslavia has perhaps been the most decisive element in recycling negative ideas in international media. However, it was not the only one. The correlation between the Greek economic crisis and the Balkans was another mirror. Contrary to approaches that mythologize the concept of the Balkans (geography, history, culture), this study reflects the difficulty of forming comprehensive narratives that encompass all the transformations from the end of the Cold War to the present day.
