There are many ways to approach a celebration. One can become melancholic by reminiscing the past, dream by making plans for the future, simply enjoy the moment, or even avoid it altogether. This is how things are for the celebration of the 100 years since the liberation of Thessaloniki in 2012.

This book is the result of the short story competition organized by IANOS, the second action within the framework of 2012. It was preceded by a photography competition and the album that captured its impressive results. It also received a great response, which proves the city's thirst for cultural activities, as well as the nurturing creativity of its people, who eagerly seek ways of expression.

A big thank you from IANOS to all those who participated in the competition and gave it life. Also, to Panos Theodoridis, Petros Markaris, and Sofia Nikolaidou, who accepted the invitation, embraced the project, and served as the judging committee, adding prestige to the competition.

I hope that this edition - just like the competition - will serve as a means of highlighting and promoting the Thessaloniki of today, while continuing to activate its people for a more participatory, creative, and optimistic future.
