Description

The book titled "Cultural-Industrial Tourism", belonging to the series "Open Library", examines an aspect of cultural heritage, the industrial heritage, while highlighting the need for its utilization as a special and alternative form connected to tourism. It is part of the broader effort made in recent decades to develop alternative tourism in our country.

Specifically, Part One examines cultural heritage, with a focus on international protection through Intergovernmental Organizations (Unesco, European Union, Council of Europe, etc.) and Non-Governmental Organizations (International Council on Monuments and Sites, International Council of Museums, etc.). Special mention is made of the Unesco Convention, which is the main international legal text concerning cultural heritage and its protection.

Part Two analyzes industrial heritage. It attempts a historical exploration of the origins of industrial heritage, while introducing us to the science of industrial archaeology. Similarly, international protection concerning industrial heritage is investigated, with an emphasis on the role of the Unesco Convention in this field, as well as organizations such as the International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, the European Union, the Council of Europe, the International Organization for Standardization, etc.

In Part Three, industrial heritage in Greece is presented. Issues related to industrial history in the country's recent history are examined, as well as the protection of modern cultural heritage through the State, Local Government, cultural institutions, institutes, and professional bodies. A more vivid picture of industrial heritage is obtained through the geographical "distribution" of significant elements of our industrial culture, while the contribution of educational research to this subject is attempted to be demonstrated.

In Part Four, all the elements concerning the main theme of the book, namely Cultural-Industrial Tourism, are extensively presented. The necessary conceptual clarifications are provided, and issues such as cultural tourists, the Charter of Cultural Tourism, the typology of tourism exploitation of industrial resources, cultural heritage industrial tourism, and industrial tourism in the modern era are analyzed. In this context, questions regarding the rational development of industrial tourism and the extent to which industrial-cultural tourism can contribute to the sustainable development of a region are addressed. A directly related issue concerning industrial tourism is its management and, in particular, the techniques of managing it.

Finally, the effort that needs to be made or is being made to highlight industrial heritage is presented, and based on this, the crucial role played by the institution of cultural routes is emphasized.

The authors in the last chapter of the book present a series of conclusions and proposals for the development of an alternative tourism strategy and the promotion of elements of industrial and cultural heritage.

The edition is accompanied and enhanced by the inclusion of an appendix with UNESCO-listed industrial heritage sites, rich photographic material, explanatory tables, bibliography, legislation, websites, and an index of the main terms encountered by the reader in the book.
