MPPT charge controllers determine the appropriate charging levels of the batteries, providing minimal losses in their actual performance. Compared to PWM controllers, which distribute the produced energy of the photovoltaic panel to the batteries at approximately 80%, the remaining energy of about 20% is lost because simple PWM charge controllers do not track the maximum power point of the photovoltaic panel. Additionally, the smart functions of an MPPT controller regarding the charging and equalization of the batteries ensure more efficient charging and maintenance, resulting in an extended lifespan. Based on the above, MPPT charge controllers are ideal for larger systems where the additional energy collection of 20% or more is worthwhile and for cases where the voltage of the solar array is significantly higher than the battery voltage, e.g., using home panels.
