The snake plant is one of the most impressive and resilient indoor plants that we can decorate our living room and office with.
Originating from Africa, the snake plant is a perennial plant with rapid growth that usually reaches a height of one meter, with its long, pointed leaves that have a fleshy texture and the ability to store water. Due to its characteristic leaves, it is called "snake plant" abroad, while in Greece it is known by the witty name "mother-in-law's tongue". It should be noted that it occasionally produces small white flowers, which, however, do not have significant ornamental value.
What conditions does the snake plant need to thrive?
Light gives life to the snake plant! Therefore, we place it in a bright spot inside the house to help it grow faster! It can also adapt to darker positions, but it will grow much more slowly there. However, it does not like direct sunlight, as it causes burns on its foliage. Like all indoor plants, we avoid placing the snake plant near heat sources, fireplaces, and radiators, and we also need to protect it from cold drafts and air conditioners. For repotting the snake plant, we use special potting soil for indoor plants, enriched with nutrients that provide good drainage.
What are the watering, fertilizing, and other care needs of the snake plant?
The snake plant has the ability to retain water in its leaves and also has a very strong root system, so its watering needs are very limited. We add water to the snake plant's pot about once a month and only if its soil has dried out. If we see the snake plant's leaves bending downwards, we probably overdid the watering and need to reduce it immediately. If we don't act in time, the snake plant will rot, and we will have to say goodbye to it. And let's not forget in spring and autumn, at least once, to provide the snake plant with liquid fertilizer for indoor plants. This will definitely boost its growth and make its foliage shinier. However, the snake plant does not need any other care, except to remove dry leaves from the base of its foliage when necessary. The snake plant is usually propagated by its rhizomes or by dividing the entire plant.
