Description

Greece has the most violent political history in Europe after World War II, argues Dimitris Psichogiou. His analysis focuses on the post-dictatorship period with the aim of proving that terrorism, bloody clashes between protesters and police, "justifiable anger," continuous occupations and destruction, and even the threatening reinforcement of neo-Nazis, cannot be explained by the "material base," by social conditions. The cause must be sought in the culture of Greek society: political violence perpetuates because the war violence of our real or imaginary ancestors is glorified. This is the militant reading of history that the Right calls the "warlike virtue of the Greeks" and the Left calls the "resistance ethos of Hellenism." Education, the violent rhetoric of parties, unions, and the media nullify the possibilities of democratic dialogue and compromises. They incite citizens to conflicts, to struggles that imitate and justify those who came before - who also justified those who came before them.
