Description
The peak that Moschopolis experienced took on the dimensions of a utopian dream, transforming it into a narrative for many researchers. The historical activities of the Moschopolitans acquired their own dynamics in the historiographical themes of the modern period, because Moschopolis in the eyes of the Vlachs of the time was a vision, an ideal center. In the changes imposed by the European correlations of the time, the Moschopolitans passed through the commercial stations and the interregional markets of the Ottoman Empire, from the trade fairs and commercial cities of the Balkans and, in some cases, the transit hinterland, to end up in the promising central Europe, in the borders of present-day northeastern Hungary, in the city of Miskolc.
In the pages of the book, the magnitude of their economic wealth, the expansion of their business movements, and the terms of their social integration are highlighted. The economic prosperity experienced by many of them differentiated them socially and culturally from the rest and made them a model for the whole society.
Despite the various restrictions and reactions of the locals, the Moschopolitan merchants managed to penetrate the economic life of Miskolc and play their own distinct role. Konstantina D. Karakosta's book attempts, through primary archival research, to re-approach and reconstruct the image that we traditionally have of Moschopolis. It then investigates historically the living conditions of its inhabitants in Miskolc as a typical sample of the Greek diaspora of that period, overlooking the myths and legends of the past.
