Description

The regulation of geographical space and the establishment of order in its use is a central goal of modern states. For this reason, the main concern of the author of this volume is to integrate the history of spatial planning into the broader framework of Greek history from the post-war period to the present day, with the help of historical literature and political scientists' analyses, without turning the book into a conventional professional manual, even though it contains a wealth of information on spatial planning in practice.

The book also serves as a chronicle of developments and an anthology of viewpoints, as the main objective was to give voice to those who have been involved in spatial planning in Greece. It is not a study of planning systems in other countries, despite the fact that it includes chapters on the regional and spatial policies of the European Union. Concern for environmental protection, sustainable development, climate change, and regional development has had a significant impact on spatial planning.

Equally important was the influence of the 1975 Constitution and the legislation that followed. This is why special chapters are dedicated to these topics. The book concludes with a concise theoretical chapter, where the state and political functioning are highlighted as critical parameters for building a theory of design suitable for interpreting spatial planning in Greek conditions.
