The present study by Plato Rodokanakis combines literary style and aesthetic load with the historical depiction of the lives of Byzantine noblewomen (and noblemen) who lived within or near the imperial palaces of Constantinople.
This historical depiction is based on a multitude of sources and studies, making the book a particularly useful reference for those interested in the daily life, customs, and traditions of Byzantium.
At the same time, the focus on the position and life of queens and noblewomen (with the exception of three empresses: Irene the Athenian [797-802], Zoe I [1028-1050], and Theodora [1055-1056], who were all wives, daughters, etc. of Byzantine emperors and nobles) allows the author to develop his captivating writing, which makes the text readable as a literary prose.
The ideological starting point and goal of Rodokanakis is the glorification of glory, which, in the case of Byzantium, he perceives as Greek glory. Rodokanakis has no doubt that Byzantium was the history of a Greek Empire.
With this reprint of "The Queen and the Byzantine Noblewomen," Ekati Publications make an important work of the early twentieth century accessible to the Greek reader, both from a historical and literary perspective. They also help us better understand this significant period for modern Greek history.
