One of the most well-known stories—and for some, the greatest—by H.P. Lovecraft brings the reader face to face with the then-unexplored Antarctica as well as the origins of several elements of the Cthulhu Mythos.

Professor Dyer, a prominent geologist, learns that a scientific expedition will soon depart for Antarctica, following the path of the journey he had undertaken a few years earlier. 

Hoping to prevent the attempt, Dyer decides to give a full account of the tragic events he had survived, this time without omitting the passages he had kept silent about upon his return, for fear of being considered insane.
