Description
The loan obtained by the German Occupation Forces during the period 1942-44 from Greece remains unpaid despite occasional actions and public pressure. While many - even in Germany - defend the Greek claim, estimates of the value of the Occupation Loan range from low levels to astronomical amounts. In addition to confusion, the lack of a valid assessment facilitates Germany's evasive tactics, resulting in the delay of justice as expectations grow.
The market-based assessment made in the book will strengthen the arguments for the settlement of the Occupation Loan, in order to close a serious economic gap between Greece and Germany. For example, the amount of the Loan recorded by the Bank of Greece alone is sufficient to repay Germany's share of the loan assistance to Greece. The owed amounts become much larger if compensation for victims is added, reaching billions if the various looting of the Third Reich is assessed. A mutual settlement will help overcome negative stereotypes of one country at the expense of the other and promote more solidarity in managing the current crisis.
