A voice emerges from the deep well. It is the voice of Julia - the alter ego of our author - and it is the well into which the constraints and desires of others have thrown her, after she succumbed to the inexorable social conventions of the era that shaped her future. Did she succumb? In a paradox that holds true - thanks to which we enjoy this work - the voice from the depths does not fade with time and does not gradually disappear in the depths of the well: on the contrary, it rises and strengthens, it is heard increasingly clearly and now, it has reached the brink! The voice has inspiration, dynamism, and intensity, it becomes narration and weaves the tapestry of the stories of the lost lives of so many people who, according to the law that governs the human condition, succumbed to their fate, unfortunate, defenseless, weak, helpless, fateful. But the narration also has a goal - and it does not need to hide it: it gradually builds a settling of accounts with the people and situations of the past, through the highlighting of the long-standing, persistent, unyielding effort of the extraordinary heroine to confront the inflexible obstacles of others' "shoulds" and the crushing jaws of the reality of the Public, to set them aside and escape.
