For twenty years, Gerhard Falkner worked on the material for the novel Apollokalypse; a complex and multi-layered work that combines Apollo, Calypso, and the Apocalypse in its title, marking the triptych of Beauty, Seduction, and Destruction. Set against the backdrop of Berlin, but also New York, in the '80s and '90s, the book's heroes leave the city but always return to it, with the action vividly capturing the (political) atmosphere of the time, the armed revolutionary groups, the secret services, the music scene. Using a language dense with metaphors and poetic images, the narrative, spiral and torrential, unfolds in a climate of organized chaos, in perfect alignment with the constant reconstitution and loss of identity of the central character. The oblique self-portrait of its protagonist, Georg Autenrieth, gives Falkner the opportunity to highlight the fragmented self of a generation and a city whose wall has collapsed.
