Description

With an unbiased description of events for the younger generations, the author covers the period 1940-45 in southwestern Peloponnese. The southwestern Peloponnese - Messinia and the nearby areas of the prefectures of Laconia, Arcadia, and Elis - was where the Civil War of 1943-44 was most intense. It was there that liberation, instead of relief and national uplift, opened a new cycle of hatred and bloodshed with alternating perpetrators and victims. With sources in literature, as well as testimonies from ordinary people and protagonists in the events, the author describes the cycle of violence and bloodshed that became decisive during that historical period and subsequent political developments. From the Dictatorship of Metaxas and the persecution of communists, to the Epic of '40, the Occupation, and the Resistance. The power vacuum provides a field of action for the well-organized and conspiratorial Communist Party of Greece. This is followed by Civil conflicts, Concentration Camps, Terrorism in the countryside, and Security Battalions. Liberation also brings about the biggest confrontation between ELAS and the Security Battalions, which causes countless victims and opens new accounts of bloodshed that the world of EAM/ELAS/KKE will have to pay after Varviza.

The events are described in detail and consistently, with historical accuracy, concise clarity, and chronological continuity. The author's text and the memories of the narrators come together in a cohesive whole. History unfolds vividly through the events, on two levels. The national, governmental, and allied level. But also that of ordinary people, who found themselves in the whirlwind, carried the heavy burden of national turmoil, and survived to give their own testimony.
