Description

The content of the book is mainly aimed at students of agricultural departments of Universities and Technological Educational Institutes (TEI) and its main purpose is to introduce them to the topics of structure and organization of the European Union and the concepts of Common Agricultural Policy. The topics are presented with the utmost clarity and with examples, both theoretical and practical, in order to be understandable to every reader who has basic knowledge of Agricultural Economics.

The book is divided into eleven chapters, each dealing with a specific unit of topics that are related to each other. The structure of the book does not create ambiguities and gaps, as all chapters form an inseparable sequence and the various topics are interconnected.

In the first chapter, which is also the Introduction, a brief historical and current overview of the European Union is presented, with particular reference to its establishment, organization, enlargement, and significant policies.

The second chapter provides a detailed description of the main institutions of the EU, as well as the composition and responsibilities of each institution and its participation in the functioning of the EU.
The third chapter describes the institutions and policies as implemented by the EU institutions and member states, in order to ensure the smooth functioning of this important organization.

The fourth chapter provides a summary of the various treaties of the EU from its establishment to the present day. These treaties constitute the primary law of the EU, as well as the legal basis for its functioning.

The fifth chapter relates to the expression of the policy on agricultural products in the European Union, particularly with regard to the Common Market Organizations (CMOs) of agricultural products. The mechanisms of their operation and the support measures of the mechanisms are described. This chapter, although it includes forms of policies that have been abolished, nevertheless provides an overview of the policy measures that were implemented in the past and the objectives pursued by these measures.

The sixth chapter presents some common measures for all Common Market Organizations. The seventh and eighth chapters include the Common Market Organizations of most agricultural products that fall under the common market organization, whether of plant or animal origin. The policy for each product, based on the basic regulation of each market, is presented in an understandable manner, following a unified approach for all products.

The ninth chapter is dedicated to the presentation of the Common Market Organization in the field of fisheries and aquaculture products. Greece is a country with a large production of marine catches, but also with a developed aquaculture sector. Information on EU policies in this sector will be useful for those involved in fishing and aquaculture.

The tenth chapter refers to certain specific issues of support for agricultural products. The eleventh chapter deals with the part of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that concerns the development of rural areas.

The measures of this chapter constitute the second pillar of the new CAP.

The writing of a book on agricultural policy carries the risk of its devaluation due to the fact that in politics everything changes, sometimes at a fast pace and sometimes at a slow pace, and possibly at some point some of the contents of the book may cease to be valid. Nevertheless, the value of the book remains unchanged, as it includes theoretical issues that form the basis of agricultural policy.
