Description

It is time for the third volume of the "Patrology". Approximately twenty years have passed since the publication of the second volume. Many things have intervened. Academic obligations, conferences, and lectures. I was absorbed in studies (two volumes dedicated to St. John Chrysostom, another to St. Cyril of Alexandria, along with smaller texts). But mainly, there was the awe in the presence of multifaceted and spiritually profound ecclesiastical figures, in the presence of Fathers and teachers of the Church, theologians who dared, with the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, to delve into the truth and thus offer solutions and a perspective on life, when heretics presented falsehood and therefore non-life and non-salvation.

The patrologist had to confront the great and dominant problem of the time; the shocking crisis caused in the East and the West by misinterpretations of the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, and its dangerous implications. The greatest minds of the fifth century, among other important pursuits, theologized about this crisis, and thus the Church arrived at two Ecumenical Councils (Ephesus, 431; Chalcedon, 451). At the same time, all kinds of ecclesiastical-theological discourse were cultivated, in an era that does not resemble the previous ones, and where the conditions are so different in the various regions, such as Constantinople and Rome, Asia Minor and France, the Balkans and Spain, Egypt and Italy, Syria and North Africa, Greece and Armenia with Georgia. For all authors, major and minor, the patrologist must bow down, explore sources, examine literature, and delve into thought, mindset, and theology where they are precisely born, in the faces and historical circumstances. Many difficulties had to be overcome... What has been achieved, what is offered in the pages of this volume? Judge, reader, but with kindness, please. [...]
