Description

The word "yermo" is an adjective in the Spanish language. It comes from the Latin "eremus", which is none other than the Greek "έρημος", which is sometimes pronounced "έρμος" and "γέρμος". The feminine form of "yermo" is "yerma". By pure coincidence, the Spanish word "yerma" is homonymous with the Greek word "γέρμα", which means "sunset, dusk, end". In this drama, therefore, the tragedy of the central heroine, Yerma, begins with her own significant name. A woman follows her primal instinct with tragic consequences for herself and everyone around her, in a journey of self-discovery with dizzying speed and stunning climax.

The plot of the work:
In a Greek mountain village in Epirus in 2019, Yerma, a married woman, faces the condemnation of her social environment because she is barren. Her intense and obsessive desire for motherhood and fertility will lead her to surpass the limits and customs of the closed society in which she lives. Yerma reaches a dead end and stages her own revolution: she kills her husband and along with him the values he represents. This violent, blind, and self-destructive outburst expresses her deep longing for a life without conventional and soul-destroying relationships. Written in 1934, "Yerma" is one of Lorca's three lyrical works, also known as the "Rural Trilogy" (the other two being "Blood Wedding" and "The House of Bernarda Alba"), in which the author deals with the theme of the subjugation of women in patriarchal societies, seeking freedom and equality. In Greece, the play was first presented in the 1960s by the National Theatre, directed and translated by Alexis Solomou. "Yerma" is a lyrical hymn to fertility, motherhood, and the social oppression of women. Lorca identifies the essential needs of his characters, denouncing the suffering of deprivation and lack of contact that leads to death, addressing every society regardless of the era.
