Description

Almost ten years after "Six Characters in Search of an Author," Pirandello writes "Tonight We Improvise" (1929), which operates on the same level as the most famous of the Sicilian playwright's works: the relationship between Art and Life.

A troupe, led by its director-manager, tries to "construct" a theatrical drama, starting from a short story (by Pirandello himself, of course).

The director wants to subject the story, the characters, and the actors to his own perceptions of theater, to shapes and formulas, to the effects of well-organized theatricality. But the actors "immerse" themselves so deeply in their roles, the roles "enter" so deeply into the actors, that they, exasperated with the director's recipes, kick him out of the theater and are left alone to live the parts they are playing. They are no longer Actor A, Character Actress B, Role Player C - they are the characters of the story, a story of Jealousy, "the most terrible jealousy that exists, the jealousy of the Past," which takes hold of a man for his wife and drives him mad at the thought that she might be dreaming of the time of her cheerful youth...
