... She slept with her eyes open. Odysseus stood beside her, with oranges in his hand, and realized that she was looking at him without seeing him. Then he passed his hand in front of her eyes and called her by the name he had found to think of her:
"Arindnera!"

Erendira woke up. She felt naked in front of Odysseus, let out a scream, and covered herself with the sheet up to her head.
"Don't look at me," she said. "I'm hideous."

"You have the color of oranges," Odysseus said. He held the fruits at eye level for her to compare them herself. "Look."

Erendira uncovered her eyes and realized that the oranges really had her own color. "I don't want you to stay now," she said.
"I only came to show you this," Odysseus said. "Look."

He opened an orange with his nails, split it in two with his hands, and showed Erendira its interior: stuck in the heart of the orange was a real diamond...
