They observed that even well-known, official historians did not provide – out of ignorance, ulterior motives, or even bias – a somewhat objective picture of that great era. Since they had lived through the events and knew the people and things involved, they wanted to limit injustices, exaggerations, inaccuracies, omissions, and take the opportunity to emphasize and remind that they too fulfilled their duty. Thus, during the reign of King Otto, various memoirs, recollections, etc., were written.

This heroic text comes from a Souliote fighter of the Greek War of Independence, who had no familiarity with writing and reading, not even the minimal amount that Makriyannis acquired through his persistence to gift us his immortal memoirs. However, just like the old man of Morea, who also had no familiarity with letters, was persuaded by an admirer of his works, a fervent patriot and scholar, the Zakynthian G.
