The work in question by Saint Augustine is primarily interpretative. It deals with the interpretation of the Gospel of John, without lacking references to heresies, the contemporary life of the church, and his society. This demonstrates the constructive nature of the sermons.

Augustine follows the historical method of interpretation, but several times we encounter his allegorical interpretation. If he sometimes coincides with Origen, this does not mean dependence. With the "strength of the better," Augustine follows his own path. However, there are also instances where his interpretation coincides with that of the Eastern Fathers.

Moreover, the lofty flights of this eagle of the spirit, the philosopher and rhetorician Augustine, are not absent, which require much effort to follow. He himself was a teacher of rhetoric. In De Doctrina Christiana 4, I, 2, he writes that he learned and taught the teachings of rhetoric in secular schools. His rhetorical prowess is evident in the structure of his speech, in the many homophones and antitheses, reminiscent of Gregory the Theologian.
