Description

Emily Dickinson, "the lady in White": one of the greatest poets of the 19th century as well as one of the most mysterious figures in world poetry. The legend of her withdrawal from the worldly was linked to her poetic retreat: she published only ten poems during her lifetime, while she composed more than 1700 poems. Her poetry elevates the everyday experience of provincial life to a transcendental vision; she touches the enigma of existence with simple and pulsating verses. Majestic and at the same time elusive, Dickinson's poetic contribution has not been extensively studied in the Greek language to this day.

The new book titled "Because I could not bear to live aloud" aspires to become a reference edition for the American poet. A bilingual anthology, it presents translations of poems from all periods of her production, many of which are translated into Greek for the first time. It also includes the entirety of Dickinson's letters, texts with their own distinct artistic value. The poems and letters are accompanied by an extensive study on Dickinson's life and poetry, which aims to fill a significant gap in the Greek bibliography on the poet.

May Dickinson's poetry become a source of upliftment for the Greek reader as well.
