Reality has always been a subject of philosophical, historical, and aesthetic discussions. But never before with such intensity. And the explanation is simple, according to the author of the book. As the reproductive capabilities of technology improve, the detection and commentary of reality become more difficult. With the help of tools taken from contemporary theories of culture, this book examines the effects of the changes observed in the broader social, economic, and political sphere on the study, position, function, and mission of theater. The question that concerns is to what extent, in a world where hybrid conditions of life and communication tend to transform identities and national cultures into fluid, almost nomadic concepts, theater will be transformed into something similar, that is, into an artistic body without fixed reference points, without roots. But also the diametrically opposite. Perhaps, ultimately, all this cancellation of borders (metaphorical and literal) will lead to an even more dynamic return, to a deep questioning of the view that a world without borders is a happy world;
As we do not know with certainty how things will evolve, which direction they will take, which new reality they will discover and which new subjects, the only thing certain is that, regardless of the way someone chooses to approach the history of theater today, they cannot attempt it without taking into account the promises, contradictions, and deadlocks of the new order of things imposed by globalization. Which means that they must seek reading and classification models that do not lead to conclusions based on the exclusive logic of "us" and "them", but will lead somewhere else, to another place that everyone desires, however, no one is absolutely sure where and how to achieve it. In the midst of this sea of (im)possibilities, the study concludes that, whether we are discussing a theater of abstraction and fiction, or a theater of documents and data (docudrama, ad verbatim, site-specific), the stake remains the same and is nothing other than some lost (or imaginary) reality.
