Description

This project is a collective effort of a modern rendition of a fundamental event for younger Greeks. It is the first attempt, after many years, of a synthetic approach to the 1821 Revolution and the early years of the free state. In the volume that concerns the ideological currents of the era, the Neo-Hellenic Enlightenment of Paschalis Kitromilidis intersects with the Ottoman perception of good governance by the Greek-speaking researcher of the Ottoman archives in Constantinople, Sukru Ilicak. It is the first time that the views of Sultan Mahmud II and his council on the Greek Revolution come to light in the field of historical science. Eleni Angelomati-Tsougaraki writes about pre-revolutionary Greek society, Thanos Veremis and Giannis Koliopoulos deal with the reasons that led the Greeks to the Revolution, Iakovos Michailidis describes the military and political events that followed, and the younger researchers, Sotiroula Vasileiou, Konstantinos Papanikolaou, and Rozi Angelaki, focus on the loans of Independence, the management of state power by Kapodistrias, and the period between the Governor's assassination and the arrival of King Otto.
