The Canon Pixma G640 is a value-for-money machine. This particular machine can produce excellent photo results, although it suffers from the common issue of paper feed marks, like most printers under 1000 Euros. However, with prolonged use, this issue may improve. Now, as for the inks, it is a thicker Dye Based Ink solution, resulting in vibrant colors while also properly adhering to most papers, even plain ones! Of course, not as much as in photo paper.
The printer is very picky about the type of paper used, and 99% of the time, it is a paper-related issue. If you prefer more cost-effective inks, I would recommend looking in Germany, where Canon sources their inks for these specific printers.
Objectively, the printer has the ability to produce more colors and tones, as well as more detail in these colors. This is not only due to the 6 inks but also because its print heads support micro-nozzles, which are approximately 384 for each color. In comparison, Epson printers, for example, only have around 400 micro-nozzles for black (for text, etc.) and around 128 for colors, and not always consistently.
Micro-nozzles are the tiny holes that release droplets of each color when sprayed onto the paper (combining each color to achieve the final result).
The supported inks will last you a considerable amount of time, but it would be good to have a second set on hand in case one runs out faster (always source them from Germany, avoiding non-genuine inks from China and India). Objectively, one bottle is equivalent to about 14 of the old ones we used to have, but for the same price. When filling it, make sure to press it slightly before closing it to create a vacuum and prevent oxidation.
Never expose the inks to UV or Blue Light, as they will deteriorate. Print at least one full-color page (e.g., photos) every week to keep the ink flowing through the tubes and prevent clogging.
Other positives: Removable Print Head (Right Head and Left Head), Quality Inks, Competes with Photo Prints, Prints up to 300gsm, supports Gloss, Matte, Fine Art, etc. It has a scanner, but it is average (600dpi). Ideally, the G540 without a scanner is recommended for purchase.
Just got it and I can confidently say that it's worth its money. The document and photo prints are impeccable. The only downside is that I would prefer it to have a backlight on the screen. As for the noise, it's satisfactory. Also, the printing as well as the scanning are quite fast.
Very good photo quality to the point where you simply don't go to a photo studio for prints anymore.
Canon's high-quality papers are naturally very expensive, but because I have worked with low-quality ones to see the differences, I notice that there is no significant difference in quality for personal use, of course. If you want professional quality, then you print on professional-grade paper.
I was torn between Epson's ecotank and the corresponding HP models, but I ended up with Canon because:
a) it has replaceable print heads, etc., which means that everything can be changed if needed and it won't cost you much. For example, with Epson ecotank, the print heads cost as much as the printer. While here, they cost around 50 euros and have the same performance.
b) because I did extensive research and saw prints on the same paper (gloss 6*10) of low quality, on 3 ecotank models (Canon, HP, Epson), I got the best quality from Canon, so I made the purchase for this reason. So, on high-quality paper, I will definitely have better results again.
So far, I have printed nearly 1000 photos and the ink is not even halfway used, it hasn't dripped at all, and the quality is fantastic.

Even after two years of heavy use, having printed entire books, I haven't needed to add ink. The prints are top-notch and the photos have the quality and durability of a photo studio. The only problem I have encountered is that at some point my computer updated to drivers for a different printer, and the documents and photos were printed incorrectly. However, this was easily resolved and at no cost through communication with Canon support. It is value for money and I recommend it to anyone who wants to make a large quantity of everyday or even non-printings at a very low cost, but does not require a fast printer. In that case, they should go for a much more expensive printer or if they only want black and white documents, a laser printer.
The 5 stars are for printing. Otherwise, I would give 3 stars because it takes a long time to open and close, and in some menu transitions, it takes a while to go from one menu to another...
Excellent photo printer.
I searched for a long time to find a photo printer with ink tank cartridges, as all the other inkjet printers have a huge cost for consumables.
Therefore, the cost of printing is a huge advantage, with excellent results on photo paper, both from Canon and other companies.
The scanner is average, and ideally, if you have another all-in-one printer, get the 540 (if you can find it) which is the same without the scanner.
Another huge advantage of the Canon is that the print heads can be removed and replaced like ink cartridges in inkjet printers, which means that if it breaks, it can be easily replaced by the user, something impossible, let's say, with the equivalent Epson printers.
With a reasonable price and decent printing times (for amateur use).
Of course, it is ideal to combine it with a cheap black and white laser printer for everyday printing.
